On Friday, when Peter showed up, Molly took him in hand and reviewed the paintings we had on hand and the sales book. It was quiet the first hour or two and I didn’t mind. I made a list of everything I needed to accomplish before I took off for Florida.

In the afternoon, I went out front and helped out. Friday afternoons were busy and we did have three or four customers in the shop at the same time. While I kept an eye on the one I was helping, I was also shadowing Peter and listening in as he worked with his first customer. It wasn’t long before Molly and I met eyes and I realized she was doing the same.

We had a steady stream of traffic so I kept the shop open until 8PM. We let Peter go at 5, figuring that was enough for a first day. He had made a sale and looked happy with himself and I was pleased about that. Molly and I barely had a moment to talk about how he had done until I turned the “closed” sign over and locked the door. It took us only a few minutes to decide Peter was a keeper.

Aidan texted and I told him I was beat. He asked if he could come over tomorrow night and cook me dinner. As if I would ever turn down a meal someone else was willing to feed me.

Saturday went as fast as Friday had and I was tired and delighted that Aidan was making dinner. In fact, by the time I got home, he was already cooking. I’m pretty easy as far as food goes and he had made some basic pork chops, potatoes and peas. Not wanting to discourage him from further cooking, I praised it but made sure not to overdo it so it wouldn’t sound fake.

We ate in thoughtful silence. After I helped him tidy up, we turned on a movie and focused on being in each other’s company. He spent the night and I was glad because we had as much time as we wanted to make love. Aidan at his best goes so slow that I’m about to lose my mind as his big slightly rough hands leave heat traces all over my body. Sometimes I frantically whisper to him to hurry. When we are both done, I’m exhausted but I know that I have been loved.

I was so sure that Paul Rogiers was the love of my life; yet making love with him was like being set on fire, fast and furious. I realize now that my satisfaction never entered his mind. I can’t tell you how many times I have realized in the past few months that, all those years I wanted him to marry me, I dodged a bullet there by his unwillingness to commit. Don’t misunderstand me; I’m truly sorry that he’s gone and always will be. It will always feel like there were issues we might have resolved between us if we’d had the chance.
